What is AMMA?

Design Exploration Project

The Asthma Monitoring and Management App (AMMA) is a new wearable health tracking and monitoring device for asthma sufferers. Google.org has created a revolutionary technology that measures a wearer’s breathing patterns, blood pressure, steps, sleep patterns, and other vital statistics.

Based on Intuitiveness and Simplicity

The Problem.

The Problem.

Asthma is a chronic lung condition that many people struggle with every day effecting their day-to-day routines. Research revealed that many asthma sufferers don't track their asthma activity. Research revealed that many asthma sufferers don't track their asthma activity.

The Solution.

The Solution.

Design an app with a companion wearable tracking device that helps asthma sufferers and caregivers log their history, set reminders to take their medication and check their heart-rate and oxygen and alert their physician.

How can we help asthma sufferers manage their breathing?

Emphathizing with asthma sufferers

Emphathizing with asthma sufferers?

Let's begin identifying the goals and objectives for the AMMA project. In order for me to gain an understanding of the challenges, frustrations and behavior patterns, I conducted the methodologies below:

User Interviews &
Surveys

User Interviews & Surveys

Interviews were conducted to learn how asthmatics cope with asthma everyday, how they manage it and what their frustrations are as well as try to identify the common behaviors and patterns. Among those who were interviewed, three participants have had asthma since childhood and 1 participant is a caregiver for her young child.

Key Findings

• Only 1 out of 4 asthma sufferers track their attacks by journaling

• Climate change is one of the biggest frustrations for asthma sufferers

• Only 1 asthma sufferer uses a monitoring wearable device

• Running and walking for long periods at a time are common challenges

After conducting my research and incorporating the goals of the user and their needs when it comes to tracking and monitoring their asthma attacks, personas were created as a representation of the user.

Storyboard

Storyboard

To provide insight into the AMMA app and wearable and explore how users will use the product, a storyboard was created for visual communication.

User Flow

User Flow

Following the app map, I created a user journey for logging into the app and signing up as a new user. This diagram illustrates the steps involved in completing each task. With the user flow, I was able to address the needs of the user before I began the visual design process to ensure that I was able to create a good and functional product.
